Australia - Mobile Communications - Revenue Overview and Statistics

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

While overall mobile services revenue growth by the mobile network operators over the last financial years has decreased on a year-on-year bases, into 2013 we are seeing a further slowdown in growth with revenue growth still going negative for Vodafone. While the issues that saw Vodafone revenues slide are unique, the price competitiveness of a mobile service together with increased offerings from the MVNOs will no doubt see overall growth level off for the next couple of years.

Overall BuddeComm expects that the MNOs will have earned close to $19 billion in revenue from mobile services by end-2012 – a growth rate of just over 2% year-on-year. Future revenue growth will also be impacted because of increased prices from the MNOs, the increased activity from some MVNOs and the tactics that Vodafone will use after its network is fully upgraded. Although, newer telephony services that 4G/LTE can provide have now brought strong growth into the sector, these new services may further increase revenue growth in the short term.

For the MNOs, the results of their latest financial year – Telstra’s total mobile revenue passed $8 billion, with Optus around $6 billion. VHA, the entity created with the merger of Vodafone and Hutchison, generated revenue close to $4.5 billion.
