Although data on the economy this week was restricted to the performance of the labour market, this yielded some useful evidence on the economy’s actual and potential strength. Notably, a hefty rise in employment in Q1 contrasted with the weakness of measured GDP. But the implications for monetary policy were ambiguous. Soft underlying pay growth and a strong rise in in the workforce augers well for non-inflationary growth. But a fall in productivity in Q1 points in the opposite direction, although “menopausal” may be going too far.
