Amid rising US-China trade tensions, there is a risk that the US could widen its protectionist trade policy to other Asia Pacific economies. We find South Korea and Japan to be most at risk of directly facing higher US import tariffs, based on our scorecard analysis. The US has a bilateral trade deficit with each of the two countries, most of which stems from automobiles. In a scenario of higher US tariffs, we expect the direct impact on South Korea to be larger than for Japan, given the former's higher level of exports to the US.
