Country Economic Forecasts - Thailand

Thailand’s external background has worsened relative to a few months ago, with increased concerns about protectionism, a further rise in oil prices and heightened tensions in some financial markets. At the same time, the evidence on the domestic economy remains rather patchy, while the expected deceleration in Chinese import demand growth will dampen the pace of Thai exports relative to last year’s performance. In addition, there are concerns about the government’s ability to implement its spending plans. As a result, we remain cautious about the pace of growth that Thailand can achieve this year, forecasting 3.2%. Indeed, given the increased uncertainty about the outlook, we now think that the central bank will not start tightening policy until 2019 – something made possible by very low inflation and a large external surplus.
