Country Economic Forecasts - Kazakhstan
GDP growth slowed to an estimated 3.8% in Q1 and we forecast a continued slowdown through 2019, to 3.3% for the full-year, as lower oil production offsets any export price rise, and political worries persist after the upcoming snap presidential election called for 9 June. While Nazarbayev retains overall control via the ruling party and Security Council, his chosen successor will struggle to assert the same authority. The extensive political and business connections of younger ruling family members will obstruct change, and orderly succession could yet be disrupted by public discontent over corruption and slow growth.
