Country Economic Forecasts > Iceland

Attention: There is an updated edition available for this report.

Manufacturing and services remain on track to reverse much of last year’s 6.6% GDP contraction by end-2021, as Iceland becomes one of the first destinations to re-open tourism to vaccinated travellers and industrial export demand picks up, reinforcing the recovery in domestic demand. GDP growth is now forecast at 3.7% this year, rising to 9.2% in 2022. Fiscal policy continues to promote recovery, with deficits narrowing cyclically but continuing to 2023, as public spending shifts from social protection towards infrastructure and new industrial sectors. The expanding external surplus, and build-up of overseas assets, ensure ISK stability, helping to lower inflation from close to 5% in Q2.
