We maintain our forecast for real GDP to expand by 2.5% in 2021. Although this is slightly lower than the IMF’s prediction of 2.8%, we consider the impact of the Delta variant which has disrupted global economic activity. Burundi’s main merchandise exports – consisting of coffee, tea, precious stones and metals – have shown resilience, thanks in part due to higher prices for most commodities. However, Covid-19 on top of political instability means that Burundi cannot fulfil its tourism potential, which weighs on the services sector.
