This report examines in detail the Indian market for mobile compressors, and is an update of the report last published in March 2013. Mobile compressors, also referred to as portable compressors, are diesel or electric powered rotary screw air compressors mounted on trolleys or skids, and provide on-site compressed air solutions to the construction, mining, water well drilling, and oil and gas sectors. Compressors for industrial or other applications are not covered in this report.
Mobile piston-type compressors, sales of which have fallen substantially in recent years, are not included in this report. These compressors are not capable of operating efficiently at high pressure, and generally require a larger engine to reach the same output of an equivalent screw compressor; for this reason it is thought that their potential will be limited. However, they are cheap, very easy to operate and maintain, and are still used on industrial and construction sites by some small, less sophisticated end-users.
Compressors mounted on the back of agricultural tractors are also purchased, and are used for road maintenance and rock breaking in quarries and mines. However, they are not included in this analysis.
Chicago Pneumatic (CP) is a business division within Atlas Copco (India) and both brands have common production facilities at Pune. However, the CP brand of mobile compressors is marketed separately through its own distribution network, and has therefore been treated as an independent supplier for the purposes of this report.
The findings presented are based on a detailed interview programme conducted with major domestic manufacturers and suppliers in March and April 2015, and on Off-Highway Research’s database.
