Asphalt Finishers in Italy (Equipment Analysis)
This report concerns the Italian market for asphalt finishers, referred to in Italian as “vibrofinitrici”, and is an update of the subject that was last covered in the European Service in June 2013. The last four years have seen a number of changes in the market, both in terms of the number of suppliers and the size of the market. For example, there are now only two domestic manufacturers, Caterpillar and Bomag. In 2011, Ammann, which took over the production facility of Antec-Elma, took the decision to transfer production away from its Italian facility near Bologna to Switzerland. This move was completed in 2013, thus ending its role as a domestic producer.
In terms of the market, the sales figures themselves for the past five years suggest a recovery in the market. Indeed, growth from the 77 units sold in 2012 to the 133 sold last year –an increase of 73 per cent – is not to be dismissed lightly. However, the historical context reveals that even last year’s improved market remains a considerable way behind the average market of the five previous years: from 2007 to 2011, the market averaged nearly 200 sales annually.
The findings presented in this report are based on Off Highway Research’s International Database and on information collected during an extensive interview programme in Italy undertaken in April 2017, which included all leading manufacturers, importers and distributors.
