South America Forage Seed Market - Segmented by Crop Type, Product Type, Animal Type and Geography- Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)

The South America Forage Seed Market was valued at USD 659.8 million in 2017 and is expected to register a CAGR of 8.8% during the forecast period (2018 - 2023). Among South American countries, Brazil held the top most position in terms of market value in 2017, with a market share of 61.6% in the South American market. Uruguay is also emerging as a potent market for forage seeds.

The livestock sector in South America is highly dynamic. With the growing demand from the consumers, South American countries have developed a number of cross breed cattle, among which, the Argentine Criollo, Argentine Friesian, and Azebuado in Brazil are promising varieties. However, cattle raising is still at a suboptimal level in countries, such as Brazil. Provinces, like Goyaz and Matto-Grosso, vast region from the Amazon to the Parana, where cattle could be easily raised without much care, are still unutilized due to the lack of facility in transport. The region has the potential to transform into a pasture land in future. It is expected that, in future, the cattle raising will gain an importance in South American countries that will further increase the demand of quality forage seeds in that region.

The Fastest Market Growing Segment by Animal Type -Ruminant
South America is the world’s largest producer of beef, with about 25 % of the global market. This market share is expected to grow due to favorable currency rates and increasing exports to China. Owing to this, the forage seed market of South America is estimated to grow at a potential rate. The major beef producing areas of South America, which use forage seed for producing forage to feed ruminants, are Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Pastor Genetics, Australia’s largest seed distributors and has supplied forage crops seed crops to South America since 2013, and has built a new warehouse in Virginia, South Australia, to house its export product. These forage seeds includes lucerne (alfalfa), medics, clovers and legumes.

Increased Cattle Export Market
South America accounted for 23% of beef and 21.4% of poultry in terms of production at a global level during 2016 - 2017. Driven by global demand, the livestock sector in South America has boomed in recent decades. This rapid growth has enabled South America to export livestock worldwide. In terms of live cattle export, Uruguay is in the top most position. In 2016, the country accounted for a share of nearly 42.5% of the total live cattle export market of South America. The growing export market for live cattle is indirectly promoting the forage sector. The demand for quality forage seeds in South America is expected to witness a higher growth rate during the forecast period.

Unpredictability of Seed Cycle
Some forage crops like Bermuda grass, alfalfa, and some clovers show an unpredictable seed cycle. On an average, forage crops should be ready for first harvest, 90 - 100 days after sowing. However, sometimes due to the genetic dormancy, they take longer time, or even fail to germinate, and the phenomenon is very much difficult to be recognized by the farmers before sowing. This kind of uncertainty have a restraining impact on the forage seed market in South America. At the same time, certain legumes like alfalfa and crimson clover are very much specific to rhizobium requirements, and failure to handle the issue before sowing could lead to poor nodulation, and affect the germ inability of the forages.
