Market Insights
The countries studied in the South Asia seed industry include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and other South Asian countries. In the seed sector of Afghanistan, the informal seed sector dominate the market while the formal seed sector mainly focuses on wheat seed, with the availability of increased number of improved varieties. The public domain also dominates the plant breeding activities in Bangladesh seed industry. However, due to growing demand for the provision of good quality seeds and varieties adapted to the local growing conditions, NGOs and private companies are involving in plant breeding.
The Indian seed industry is one of the mature industries with private and public sectors playing important roles in seed production. The private sector accounts for the majority of seed market share, and constitutes a heterogeneous entity. The increasing investment in R&D, plant breeding, etc., acceleration in the use of hybrid seeds with various technological components (such as seed treatment etc.), and rising international trade are a few reasons for growth in the private sector. With respect to the Pakistan seed industry, favorable policies, such as, no restriction on the private sector from selling commercially-viable crop seeds, and the provision to import and export seeds, have attracted many national and multinational companies to come and operate in Pakistan.
Private seed companies, village-based small seed enterprises (SSEs), Agrovets, cooperatives, and groups organized by the Department of Agriculture’s Crop Development Directorate are the important players in the Nepal seed industry.
The multinational companies, such as Monsanto, Syngenta, Dupont Pioneer, play an important role in the seed sector of these regions with many local companies such as BRAC and Lal Teer in Nepal, Rallis, Advanta, Nuziveedu etc. in India, Helal group in Afghanistan, and Jullundhar Group in Pakistan also occupy a significant market share.
