Growing Application of ISR by Government Agencies:
Acquiring integrated ISR requires a holistic approach, where developers make interoperability part of the design from the outset. There is a strong trend towards governments identifying common threats across multiple security agencies. Countries such as Mexico and Brazil are likely to present the defense majors with economies of scale and the end users with required efficiency. This can be achieved by increasing the commonality of systems used by different end-user groups. The conventional products, systems, and services will increasingly fulfil the requirements of multiple agencies in a country, under a unified command.
Most wheeled/ armoured fighting vehicles that have recently been contracted by MoDs in countries such as Brazil, Turkey, India, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia, have computing systems on board, along with a latest open vehicle electronic architecture (VEA). This enables the combination of all elements of total situational awareness like communications, surveillance, navigation, detection, force tracking (blue/red), fire control, and survivability/protection systems (i.e., Counter-IED) into a conventional display with the aim of providing comprehensive force protection on the frontline.
Adoption of UAVs for ISR Application:
Unmanned vehicles are being used for a wide variety of missions. Primarily they are being used for ISR, long duration missions where data collection is very much needed. In future, they are expected to move to cargo transportation and more manned-unmanned teaming where they can act as extensions for a manned aircraft. Manned-unmanned teaming, wherein manned aircraft control the flight path and sensor payload of a nearby UAS while in flight is emphasized as critical to the United States Air Forces’ plans. For instance, an Air Force F-35 Joint Strike Fighter may have several UAS assigned to it to perform a variety of missions from ISR to off-board weapons delivery in dangerous or hard to reach areas. The US Army introduced advanced manned-unmanned teaming technology in its helicopter fleet by successfully engineering Apache and Kiowa aircrews to control UAS flight paths and sensor payloads from the air in the cockpit.
Jun 2018: Northrop Grumman Corp. was given a five-year contract of worth USD 866 million, to modify and upgrade the Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System (PARCS), the Precision Acquisition Vehicle Entry Phased Array Warning System (PAVE PAWS), and the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS). These are the three aging ground-based warning radar systems that help the United States and its allies from enemy ballistic missile attack.
Jan 2018: The US Navy announced its plan to procure three more MQ-4C Triton long-range and long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) over the vast ocean and coastal regions.
Dec 2017: The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) has announced it has set up of new intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance unit to monitor the key North Korean facilities.
