Global Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) Market - Segmented by Technology (LTE Advanced, LTE Advanced Pro, 5G), Type (SU-MIMO, MU-MIMO), and Region - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)
Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) Market was valued at USD 1.06 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach a value of USD 7.75 billion by 2023 at a CAGR of 39.4% over the forecast period (2018 - 2023).
Massive Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is the most recent iteration of antennas. The wide range of advantages such as increased range and 3D beamforming are rapidly expanding the adoption rates of this technology, especially in the advanced telecommunication markets, like North America and Europe. However, in case of much higher demand zones of Asia Pacific, the technology is still in testing phase and is limited to top end commercial applications only.
In the recent years, exponentially growing mobile devices for commercial use, in arrears to the, bring your own device (BYOD) to work policies have created an enormous demand for high-speed internet connections. The evolution of LTE advanced and LTE advanced pro applications has served this purpose for quite a long time now and stand to be the key technologies for implementing MIMO antennas in the current market scenario. However, with mobile network companies focusing on 5G preparedness, multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) is expected to drive the growth of massive MIMO market over the forecast period.
Increasing Adoption of MU-MIMO
The single user MIMO has been a golden standard for antennas for a long time. But just like any other communication technology, SU-MIMO also suffered certain drawbacks. The most obvious downside to single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) is that the multiple streams of data must be sent or received between just one device at a time and both the transmitting and receiving radios have to support the MIMO technology, along with having multiple antennas. This adds additional cost, weight, and size to the devices which were hard to implement in smaller devices, like smartphones and tablets.
But with the advent of MU-MIMO, these issues were addressed leading to a technology that provides higher capacity gain and multiplexing gain along with higher data throughputs. The easy implementation of 3D beamforming that addresses the issues of wireless networks in high internet traffic areas and high-rise buildings is one of the factors that is enabling rapid adoption of MU-MIMO in large metropolitan cities. Although the massive MU-MIMO suffers some critical security drawbacks that could compromise pilot channels of a network and has a high signal to noise ratio, technical advancements over time are expected to address these issues propelling the market over the forecast period.
North America to Forefront the Growth
North America is one of the most advanced markets for mobile communications and MIMO technology in the world. According to Samsung, the total number of mobile subscribers in the US market alone exceed 300 million as of 2016, excluding IoT devices. This number is expected to grow by another 40 million with more than 70% of all subscribers using LTE through 2022. In case of the US, companies AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint account for nearly 95% of all subscriptions. With most of these companies investing in 5G technology, massive MIMO is already witnessing an increased rate of adoption in the region.
Collaborations between companies, like Verizon and Ericsson, and T-Mobile and Sprint to implement massive MIMO technologies to future-proof their companies are driving the growth of massive MIMO in the region. Sprint Communications, which is responsible for 14% of subscribers in the US, leads its competitors in total MHz owned. As of 2017, the company had 204MHz consisting of a mix of low, mid, and high bands with over 160MHz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz band (highly feasible for LTE plus networks). This has attracted T-Mobile to acquire the company for USD 26 billion making it one of the largest bandwidth holders in the country. Over the forecast period, such expansions amongst the key players in the region are expected to drive the demand for massive MIMO in the region.
