According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, the level of air pollutants present indoors are found to be at least 2-5 times more than that of outdoor. Therefore, indoor pollution has been ranked among top five risks to human life. One of the major causes of pollutants is the use of paint. The paint contains several types of volatile organic compounds (VOC) which it keeps emitting for many years. The VOCs are used in paints to bind its chemicals and once the paint is applied these compounds are emitted into the surrounding areas. A person who has to spend most of his day either in the office or home, the presence of highly volatile VOCs in the air presents a significant risk to health. VOCs are also found in paint strippers, adhesives, permanent markers, cleaning materials, building materials and furnishes. Low VOC products, on the other hand, are water based or use various plant oils, plant dyes, essential oils, soy oil, and linseed oil among others.

There is a growing worldwide awareness about healthy living. The efforts are on towards identifying the factors that cause negatively affect health and focus on either replacing or reducing their use. Conventional paints now have come into focus for their use of harmful chemicals and zero VOC or low VOC paints have emerged as suitable replacements for conventional paints. In terms of performance low VOC paints have been found to be similar to conventional ones. Low VOC paint performs well to fulfill the criteria of coverage, scrub-ability and hide-ability. Since this paint does not emit harmful VOCs, this has been found to be suitable for persons facing problems for asthma and other respiratory diseases. During paint production, no harmful chemicals are used and the leftovers after the use can be safely disposed of.

The low VOC paints are used by various industries like landscaper, log homes, marine, pre-stained wood product, park and recreation, restoration, roofing, wood products and concrete building. The low VOC paints are micro porous, and once applied penetrate the surface and form a bond which allows the walls to breathe. This makes it suitable to be used in walls, children’s area as well as the kitchen. These are also present in various colors and suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor wall. The use of less harmful materials in low VOC paint ensures that there are fewer possibilities of ground fill, water and air pollution. The buildings that have already been painted with traditional paints can still be painted with low VOC paints.

Although third party certifications exist for green paint certifications like the GS-11 and GS-47, the Green Seal Standard for Paints, Coatings, Stains and Sealers and the California Air Resources Board Regulations, not all companies are following them. Some manufacturers have been using low VOC term for products with low VOC while some use naturally available ingredients with zero VOC. Furthermore, the major constraint for the use of low VOC paints is the cost which is marginally higher than conventional ones. Also after application on the surface the paints slightly more time for curing than the conventional ones.
