Global High-Density Polyethylene Market (HDPE) - Segmentation by Type, End-User Industry and Geography - Growth, Trends and Forecast (2018 - 2023)
The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) market is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period (2018 – 2023). Owing to its unique performance advantages over other materials, such as moderate cost, ease of handling & installation, long service life, and corrosion resistance, the demand for polyethylene in small and medium diameter pipes is increasing.
Increasing Use of Plastic Pipes as Substituents
HDPE accounts for the second-largest share of the plastic pipe demand and is expected to witness the strongest gains in demand during the forecast period. HDPE pipes are expected to register an increase in the use in sewer & drainage, potable water, and natural gas distribution applications, and they are expected to occupy the current market share of other materials, such as steel and concrete. HDPE pipes are highly preferred for water distribution due to their welding joints. Additionally, HDPE pipes are being examined to put into use in nuclear plants by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), as these pipes prevent corrosion unlike the metallic pipes currently being used for these applications.
Packaging is the Fastest Growing Segment
HDPE films are by far the fastest growing HDPE product type, owing to the rapidly increasing demand from various end-user industries, majorly from the packaging industries. HDPE films find a majority of their application in food and non-food packaging. Low odor and excellent chemical resistance make HDPE films ideal for usage in food packaging. In addition, regulatory bodies, such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have deemed use of HDPE films ideal for food contact applications. Recently, its usage in food packaging applications has increased due to the development and availability of thinner films that also provide the required performance characteristics.
Middle-East to Lead the Market
The Middle-East region is expected to witness a substantial increase in the demand for HDPE owing to expanding construction, healthcare, and other manufacturing industries in the coming years. The Saudi Arabian government has initiated an industrial clustering program to focus investments and growth in minerals & metals, automotive, plastics & packaging, home appliances, and solar energy. Apart from the pre-established demand for HDPE in these sectors, the growth in infrastructure, primarily in the middle-east countries, and the possible industrial expansion, owing to government initiatives, have led to an increase in the demand in the market.
