Global Biological Control Market - Growth, Trends and Forecasts (2017 - 2022)

Global Biological Control Market is slated to grow at a CAGR of 13.6% during 2016-2021 forecast period in order to reach a market value of $3588.35 million by 2021. The market demand for biocontrol agents in agriculture is reported to be $1680 million in 2015. Biocontrol agents are beneficial organisms that help farmers in pest control and plant growth. Biological control products are commercially available products that contain beneficial organisms: the naturally occurring enemies of unwanted pests and pathogens.

Biocontrol agents or biological control products are considered as ecologically sustainable and safe crop protection solutions. These products are used in agriculture and forestry, mainly in organic systems as part of the control strategies in integrated pest management (IPM).

The growth of the biological control market is attributed to high cost of agrochemicals and their negative impact on food quality and environment. Popularity of organic and environment friendly farming practices and the dire need for improved food productivity globally are also responsible for increased usage of biocontrol products. Factors like lack of awareness about the biocontrol agents/ products and low adoption rate due to lack of proper channels are restricting the market growth of this niche segment. Additionally, high growth potential in the developing regions and popularity of Integrated Pest Management Practices in developed countries may provide the future growth potential.

Global biological control market is segmented by type, target pest, crop application and by geography. By type, the market is segmented into three broad categories of macrobials, microbials and entomopathogenic nematodes. Macrobials or beneficial insects are placed in the fields in packages to facilitate their release whereas microbials like bacteria and fungi are applied in the form of liquids or granules. Among bacterial and fungal products, bacterial biocontrol products form most of the demand. By target pest, the market demand is explained by Arthropods, Weeds and Micro-Organisms. By application in crops, fruits and vegetable sector account for majority of the usage globally. Biocontrol application is further divided into Seed Treatment, On-Field and Post- Harvest wherein on-field forms most of the demand. Increasing usage of biocontrol in high value horticultural crops will spur demand further.

In the geographical segmentation, North America dominated the market place in 2015 with around 35% share globally. Europe is the second largest market with around one-fifth of the global share; the regional market is led by Germany, UK and France. The European Union’s measure of reducing dependency on pesticides and implementing alternative approach has led to growing demand of biocontrol products in the region. Latin America region would experience fastest growth owing to the oilseed crop applications. In Asia-Pacific, usage of biological controls in cereals and grains would be more in countries like India, China and Vietnam etc. Asia-Pacific is a potential region with investments coming from major players in the market.

Currently biological control market accounts for 3-4% of global pesticide market demand. The key companies in the market are BASF SE, Dupont, ayer CropScience AG, Biobest N.V., BioTech Systems LTD, Certis USA LLC, Novozymes and Advanced Biological Marketing, Inc.etc. The global leaders are safeguarding their competitive position with wide product mix and considerable brand image. Introducing new effective products through investments in R&D is another strategy to stay ahead of the competition.
