Synthetic vision for aircraft is a boon that allows the pilot to see outside the cockpit without leaving the seat. This boon has given additional situational awareness to the pilots thus benefiting the flight safety and operations. The market for aircraft synthetic vision systems is expected to register compound annual growth rate of 6.67% in the forecast period of 2015 - 2020.

The systems used in the aircraft have to conform to regulations set by the FAA and has enhanced operations under few conditions when equipped with EVS/SVS. Unmanned aircraft use a synthetic vision system in combination with enhanced vision systems to guide the pilot on detecting targets, visuals of the surrounding terrains and also helps in landing and take-off operations. Here the systems provide a much more advanced and real life like displays as the pilot is completely dependent on the instruments for inputs.

The aircraft synthetic vision system will find active interest from both military and commercial aircraft OEMs and operators alike. As of today 16,000+ commercial aircraft orders are pending with Airbus and Boeing alone. About 1000 of these aircrafts have offered SVS/EVS for their aircraft as an accessory in cockpit. Additionally Boeing and Lockheed Martin have pending orders for military fighter aircraft that need SVS/EVS with HUD as a compulsory in cockpit technology. Commercial business jet provider Gulfstream Aerospace is the leading aircraft OEM in the private segment that provides EVS installed in flight deck as a standard for all of its G450 and later series of aircraft. Till now it has delivered 500 aircraft with FAA certified EVS installed on flight deck, about one-fourth of its total deliveries since establishment.

The key players in the Global Aircraft Synthetic Vision Systems market are Honeywell Aerospace, Rockwell Collins, Cobham, Garmin and Universal Avionics Systems. Gulfstream Aerospace leads the market for aircraft with EVS preinstalled in flight deck as a standard feature. Rockwell Collins and Garmin are the leading suppliers. Embraer 190, Saab 2000, Boeing 727, 737 and 787 series are the only passenger aircraft with HUD option, Boeing 787 has HUD as a standard equipment. Canadair RJ, Airbus 318 and several other business jets have featured HUD. Airbus A320, A330, A340 and A380 families are undergoing certification for HUD as of now.

A number of military aircraft have installed HUD systems that act as an advantage while engaging targets in air or ground. Most notable aircraft in this are FA-18, F-16, F-35, C-17 Globemaster, and the F-16.
