Europe Wheat Market - Segmented by Geography - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)

The total production of wheat in Europe accounted for 250.1 million metric ton in 2016. In 2018, there have been rising stockpiles of wheat, leading to a fall in prices. A rise in wheat diseases had spread to infect the harvests in Europe in 2017, and it is expected to damage harvests in the next season. Severe wheat damage in Europe could drastically affect the food prices, inflation, and the region’s economic stability.

Severe Climatic Conditions Affecting Wheat Production
There have been several incidences in the past where wheat has been exposed to high temperatures, severe droughts, and field inaccessibility compared with other types of adverse events. Extreme weather conditions have accounted for more than 40% of the variability in production of wheat in Europe.

Pest Diseases Drastically Affect the Wheat Production
An infection that struck wheat crops in Sicily in 2016 was a strain of fungus that was new and unusually devastating. Researchers believe that its spores might spread to infect the upcoming harvests of the next few years in Europe. In 2016, the stem rust destroyed 10,000 of hectares of crops in Sicily. Researchers have suggested that the pathogen has the potential to infect dozens of laboratory-grown strains of wheat, including the hardy varieties that are generally resistant to disease.

Russia is the Largest Producer
The production of wheat by Russia in 2016 was 73.3 million metric ton. Russia was not only the largest producer but also one of the largest exporters for the year 2017. Despite a 25% decrease in the European Union exports of wheat in the year 2017, the exports of Russia have increased by 20%. Russia, home to a failing Soviet farm industry and completely reliant on imports, has in the recent years emerged as a wheat superpower.
