Europe Molluscicides Market - Growth, Trends and Forecasts (2017 - 2022)

The Europe molluscicides market was USD 182.58 million in 2015 and is expected to reach USD XX million by 2021. The market is projected to witness the growth of CAGR XX% during 2016-2021. Europe is second largest molluscicides market globally and it accounts for XX% of the total Europe pesticides market.

Europe is a matured market for pesticides. Fruits and vegetables are widely grown in in the region and are affected by various pests including mollusks. Insecticides accounts for the 50% of the pesticides market share followed by fungicides (30%), herbicides (5%) and molluscicides (XX %). Currently, the European molluscicides market is dominated by the synthetic molluscicides, however, due to the strict regulatory structure, growth of the bio-based molluscicides will remain higher during the coming decade. Snails are major pest to rice seedlings and broad leaf vegetables in the region.

With the rising crop losses due to slugs and snails farmers are inclined to use molluscicides. Molluscicides cannot be substituted by other insecticides and, therefore, form a separate product market. Changes in the management of crops (such as minimum tillage, direct drilling, and high organic matter build up in the soil) have led to increased population densities of slugs and snails, further exacerbating this problem and resulting in more extensive and severe damage to crops. Current chemical methods for controlling slugs and snails are mostly based on metaldehyde, ferric phosphate, methiocarb or thiodicarb. Methiocarb and thiodicarb are carbamate compounds, and are highly toxic to mammals. Since they are insecticides, their use in slug control can also harm beneficial insects present nearby. Metaldehyde and ferric phosphate are less toxic to beneficial organisms, but are also less efficacious for gastropod control.

By active ingredient type, Europe molluscicides market has been divided into metaldehyde, methiocarb, ferric phosphate, niclosamide and others till 2014. After 2014, the European Union has revoked the use of methiocarb in the region due to its effect on grain eating farm birds. By active ingredient type Metaldehyde based molluscicides makes the largest part of the industry followed by ferric phosphate. The major companies dominating the market are Certis, Lonza and Doff Portland. These three players have captured XX% of the market share. The famous brands in the region are Slug Killer Blue Mini Pellets, Certis Meyaldehyde 3, Slugtox, Sluxx, Derrex and Ferramol Max.
