The China water and wastewater treatment (WWT) technology market is expected to witness a CAGR of 9.45% during the forecast period. The growth is largely fuelled by extensive usage of WWT technologies in municipal water and wastewater treatment. The eastern part of China accounts about one-third capacity of the total WWT plants, while the northern-west China accounts the least number of WWT plants (about one-sixth of the total WWT plants).

Increasing Demand from Industrial Sector

At the beginning of 2018, China recorded an increase in industrial output, fixed asset investments, and retail sales, from the levels witnessed during December 2017. According to the China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the industrial sector grew by 7.2% between January and February of 2018, as compared to the same period a year earlier, exceeding economists’ forecasts of 6.1%. Increasing pressure on the industry to improve water efficiency and reduce pollution discharges is expected to drive the demand for industrial water treatment technologies. China’s 13th Five-year Plan on Urban Sewage Treatment and Water Recycling Facilities Planning aims to spend around RMB 559 billion (about USD 87.5 billion) or 0.75% of its GDP on its water treatment industry. This is expected to increase the application of improved technology in industrial processes.

Usage in Oil and Gas Sector is Expected to Increase

In the oil and gas industry, water also gets extracted during the process of oil extraction, which is known as produced water. Produced water contains undesirable qualities that are to be separated from the water. Oil production in the country declined in 2016 by 7.2%, producing 199.7 million metric ton. China surpassed the United States in annual oil imports in 2017, importing 8.4 million barrels per day in comparison to 7.9 million barrels per day for the United States. The country is aiming to add at least 2.5 million barrels per day of refining capacity by 2020, which is expected to drive the water and wastewater treatment technology market in the country.
