Rail Travel Worldwide - March 2018

“Competition in passenger rail services is set to intensify in the coming years and decades. For decades, if not centuries, most of the world's rail companies have operated as state-run monopolies. Now this is changing as markets are being liberalised to allow new entrants, in a way similar to the air transport sector where the move to deregulate began roughly 40 years ago. At the same time, there will be heightened competition from other modes of transport, notably the airlines and intercity bus operators, depending on the region.”
