Synopsis

Key Highlights

The construction industry is defined as the value of work put in place annually in the residential and non-residential segments. Civil engineering work is excluded. Where possible data has not been seasonally adjusted.

The Nigerian construction industry had total revenues of $21.6bn in 2016, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7% between 2012 and 2016.

The residential segment was the industry's most lucrative in 2016, with total revenues of $16.9bn, equivalent to 78% of the industry's overall value.

Growing population and urbanization have fuelled demand for housing, whereas the country is characterized by housing shortage. The growth of activities in non-residential construction, particularly in commercial construction, has been strong up to 2016 when the domestic economy entered in recession. However, the country’s economic recession in 2016 only slightly affected the growth of the industry in that year, as the government increased public investment on infrastructure.
