This growth was spread across all three market sectors in 2014 with the most substantial growth occurring in the casual dining category. Promotional activity in this sector has bolstered brand loyalty among restaurant chains such as Pizza Express and Prezzo while the sector has also had significant success in exploiting the growing demand for ‘gourmet junk food’ through brands such as Byron and Honest Burger. While it remains the smallest category in this market the pub restaurants sector also exhibited healthy growth in 2014; British cuisine remains popular while pubs also benefitted from high footfall during the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in the summer. Finally although the quick-service sector is the largest in this market it exhibited the slowest rate of growth in 2014. Leading brands such as McDonald’s and Nando’s continue to be successful while emerging brands such as Taco Bell and Chipotle offer significant growth potential but the overall category remains saturated and fiercely competitive restricting performance.
