About traction transformer
One of the most vital components of a rolling stock is a traction transformer. It forms the most integral part of an electric traction system and helps in the smooth movement of motors such as locomotives, high-speed trains, and trams. For over a century, these transformers have been used in railway traction. It is considered to be the best alternative to the conventional fossil-fuel-based traction systems. It comes with various mounting options: on-board, undercarriage, and rooftop. Traction systems can be broadly segmented into the following: AC systems and DC systems. Typical system setups are the following: 25 kV AC 50 Hz, 15 kV AC 16 2/3 Hz, 3 kV DC, 1.5 kV DC, and 1.2 kV DC.
These traction systems may have a combination of stationary transformers, auto transformers, and booster transformers. Traction transformers are used to bring down the voltage from the overhead electric line, i.e., 15/25 kV to the desired voltage level, i.e., 0.7/1.5 kV for the traction converters in an electric train.
