Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The rapid penetration of smartphones has led to 47% of active bank accounts using the internet for transactions, with 24% conducting transactions using smartphones. The transactions made through the internet surged up to in 2014. The convenience and hassle-free mode of conducting bank transactions has led consumers to prefer mobile banking. Banks have made a heavy investment in 2014 to promote mobile banking.”

According to the report, of the 16 common taxes, the government recently nullified two taxes, PIS/PASEP and COFINS, earlier imposed on smartphones. PIS/PASEP was applicable on the gross revenue earned by all legal entities including non-profit makers and organizations that come under the government. COFINS was a state tax paid by companies that collected taxes on value-added services. The exemption of these taxes will lead to a decline in the prices of smartphones, increasing their adoption among the cost-conscious population.

Further, the report states that high data plan cost acts as a barrier to mobile internet, reducing the demand for smartphones in the low income group.
