Silica Gel Market in the GCC Region 2017-2021
About Silica Gel
Silica gel is a vitreous, granular, porous form of silicon dioxide that is synthetically made from sodium silicate. As an adsorbent, it has an average pore size of 2.4 nanometers and has a strong affinity to adsorb water molecules. Silica gel’s high surface area of around 800 m²/g allows it to adsorb water rapidly and makes it useful as a desiccant (drying agent); once saturated with water the gel can be regenerated by heating.
Technavio’s analysts forecast the silica gel market in the GCC region to grow at a CAGR of 7.38% during the period 2017-2021.
Covered in this report
The report covers the present scenario and the growth prospects of the silica gel market in the GCC region for 2017-2021. To calculate the market size, the report presents a detailed picture of the market by way of study, synthesis, and summation of data from multiple sources. The market is divided into the following segments based on geography:
Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Silica Gel Market in the GCC Region 2017-2021
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the silica gel market in the GCC region: BASF, Clariant, Evonik, W. R. Grace, and Zeochem.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: FUJI SILYSIA CHEMICAL, Innova Global, Merck, Sinchem Silica Gel, and Sorbead India.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “One trend in the market is growing applications of allochroic silica gel. Allochroic silica gel is the colored form of silica gel, which changes color upon absorbing moisture from the environment. The increasing use of allochroic silica gel in various industrial applications such as power systems is a positive trend seen in the silica gel market in the GCC region.”
According to the report, one driver in the market is rising consumption of silica aerogel. Generally, an aerogel is the porous, less dense, dry, and solid part of a gel that exhibits extreme material properties. Essentially, silica gels are the pellets of silica xerogels, which are primarily used in the production of silica aerogel. Silica aerogel is produced by eliminating the liquid component of a gel by means of a supercritical drying methodology. Silica aerogel possesses a wide range of properties such as low bulk density, hydrophobicity, low thermal conductivity, optical transparency, and high surface area. It is generally used in the construction, textile, and electronics industries.
Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is health hazards related to the use of silica gel. The inhalation and ingestion of silica gel may result in severe health hazards, which can restrict the growth of the market in the coming years. Silica gel is widely used as an adsorbent and desiccant in various food, pharmaceutical, and healthcare products. Its ability to absorb humidity and moisture prevents any probable damage to packaged food products. Although silica gel is a non-toxic substance and is not very harmful when ingested in minute quantities, its increased use as a food additive can result in its accumulation at higher concentrations in the body, which may result in various health problems.
