The mining process of batteries consumes plenty of water, energy, and chemicals, resulting in a heavy carbon footprint. The low battery life and the eventual disposal of the consumed batteries are major environment threats. The ZigBee wireless network counters these disadvantages related to manufacturing, distribution, and disposal.”
According to the report, most of the remotes available today incorporate IR technology to send commands to consumer electronic devices, which evident from the fact that in 2015, IR-based motion control remotes accounted for 78% of the market share. This scenario will change during the forecast period with RF technology gaining traction among OEMs.
Further, the report states that ZigBee operates on 802.15.4 radios, which receive IP packets that are enabled by 6LoWPAN. Bluetooth technology, which includes Bluetooth spinoff Bluetooth low energy (BLE) or Bluetooth Smart, has significant adoption in home control applications. Bluetooth Smart-enabled remotes have become imperative for TVs, which are transforming from classic Bluetooth to Bluetooth Smart ready. BLE consumes relatively much less energy than classic Bluetooth, which makes BLE an effective and energy-efficient alternative for battery-operated devices such as smartwatches and proximity sensors. We estimate that Bluetooth modules are priced in the range of $2-$3 in volume, while ZigBee modules are priced in the range of $3.5-$4.5 and Z-Wave in the range of $4.5-$5.5 for the same volume.
