Urology surgery involves diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of diseases in organs such as ureters, kidneys, bladder, prostate, penile, and testicles. Such surgeries comprise procedures such as inguinal hernia surgery, bladder tumor surgery, and other urology surgeries. Urology surgeries require a high volume of urology supplies. Most of these supplies are single-use and disposable, and very few are reusable (dependent on way of manufacture and FDA guidelines). These supplies include access sheaths, stone retrieval devices, guidewires, drainage bags, ureteral catheters, ureteroscopes, tubes, urology forceps. They also include needles, clamps, urine collection bags, and other consumables and accessories. Urology surgery supplies are mostly used in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs).

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “One trend in market is new product launches and R&D activities. The vendors are concentrating on developing technologically advanced urology surgery supplies especially single-use devices. Most of the urology surgery supply companies are focussing on enhancing their R&D activities for developing new products with an aim to improve the diagnosis and treatment of urological disorders. They are also concentrating on developing urology supplies with ergonomic features to access and provide better operative flexibility. The major urology surgery supplies include retrieval devices, guidewires, ureteral catheters, access sheaths, and advanced coated supplies (nitinol, PTFE, and hydrophilic). Most of the vendors are focusing on providing advanced urology supplies in the market to gain maximum share. For instance, in 2016, Boston Scientific launched Dakota Nitinol Stone Retrieval Devices with Opensure Handle. This retrieval device has advanced features to capture, remove, and reposition stones of different sizes all in a single procedure. In 2017, Cook Medical has launched Motion Hybrid Wire Guide, a two-in-one wire guide featuring nitinol access and Teflon fixed core wire guide into a single device.”
According to the report, one driver in market is growing prevalence of urological disorders. An increasing prevalence of urological disorders has been noticed in recent times across the world. For instance, a number of people with prostate cancer, which is the second most common cancer prevalent in males after skin cancer, is increasing globally. It is majorly found to affect men aged above 50 years. Nearly 37,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Another disorder associated with prostate gland is BPH, which is commonly known as the enlargement of the prostate. For instance, according to CDC statistics, in 2013, approximately 0.17 million individuals in the US were diagnosed with prostate cancer, while 0.02 million people died from the disease. Urolithiasis or kidney stone is the most common and painful urological disorders across the globe. This disease has a lifetime prevalence of nearly 10% in the adult population and is most usually found in the age group between 15-60 years. The incidence rate of urolithiasis is around 7% and 12% in women and men, respectively. Around five million patients are diagnosed with kidney stones worldwide every year and with a recurrence rate of nearly 50% or more up to five years and up to 80% up to 10 years.
Further, the report states that one challenge in market is complications and risks associated with urology surgical procedures. Urology surgery devices are complicated to use. The usual post-surgery complications include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, ureteral colic, fever, and skin ecchymosis. This is common for Post-operative kidney management. Hematuria, blood clots, and urethral strictures are some of the adverse effects caused by the urology surgeries such as prostate surgery. Despite advances in technology, several types of complications and injuries can occur during surgeries (in case of both open and endoscopic pelvic surgeries) such as ureteral injuries; pelvic ureteral injuries such as kinking by suture, partial laceration, ligation, and loss of blood supply; and laparoscopic injuries. Though laparoscopy is considered as one of the most widely performed urology surgeries, it is associated with various complications as high as 22%. As surgical volume is increasing globally, the magnitude and incidence of complications also amplified drastically. Few such complications associated with laparoscopy include intraoperative vascular injuries, vascular access-related complications, hemorrhage after partial nephrectomy, urinary tract complications, upper tract complications, and visceral and bowel complications.
