According to the report, epoxy resins have better electrical properties and sustainability at high temperature ranges in comparison to UPRs. Epoxies are preferred in applications that require properties like improved adhesive power, mechanical strength, and resistance to environmental degradation. Epoxy resins are generally used as adhesives, coatings, and casting materials in commercial and military aerospace applications. Aerospace applications include flooring panel, ducting, wings of an aircraft, and vertical and horizontal stabilizers. Epoxies offer high strength, low shrinkage, and good adhesion characteristics.
Further, the report states that one of the most vital challenges faced by the market is the need for styrene in the manufacture of UPRs. Styrene is a highly flammable and toxic material, which is harmful to human health. Styrene vapors can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, if not handled properly. The use of styrene is also restricted because of its unpleasant odor and worker exposure concerns. This challenge, however, can be overcome by developing a monomer-free UPR to reduce VOC emissions. Many companies are researching on this technology, and DCPD resins are increasingly being mixed with low-styrene-emission resins to decrease their emission levels. As such, the demand for DCPD resins over orthophthalic resins in the manufacture of sanitary ware, bathtubs, and wind blades has increased in regions such as North America and Europe.
