However, limited availability and robust competition in LED sapphires have resulted in shifting of some key manufacturers such as Cree to GaN-on-Si LEDs. GaN-on-Si LEDs are the latest development in the LED market. Silicon wafers are abundantly available and less expensive compared to sapphire. Producers of GaN-on-Si LED manufacturers are leveraging the already penetrated market for silicon wafers to achieve economies of scale through volume production. This leads to the production of low-cost GaN-on-Si LEDs. GaN-on-Si can pose a tough competition to sapphire-made LEDs, as these are potential substitutes to sapphires regarding cost benefits.”

According to the report, ban on mercury-based UV lighting solutions will be a key driver for market growth. Mercury-based lighting solutions, such as incandescent lamps, are banned due to their environmental concerns, thus resulting in a rise in the adoption of LED lighting source. This is the same scenario in the UV lighting market as well. UV LEDs are non-hazardous source of UV radiation, as these LEDs are ozone and mercury free and have other energy-saving properties that enhance sustainability. OEMs around the world are thus investing heavily in UV LED technology to reduce their power supply cost and adhere to legislative changes by replacing mercury-based UV lamps. Numerous environmental regulations worldwide are expected to further fuel the adoption of UV LEDs.

Further, the report states that high cost of substrates will be a challenge for the market. Epilayers of AlGaN-based materials on AIN substrates are used to fabricate UV-A LEDs, as these provide better cost-to-performance ratio than other materials. Manufacturers often prefer using bulk AlN substrate for UV-B and UV-C LEDs, as these have better efficiency and power output at device level. It is easier to grow AlGaN-based materials on AlN substrates compared to conventionally used sapphire. These substrates are available in small sizes and are 2.5-4 times more expensive than sapphire wafers. This increases the overall UV LED production cost for manufacturers and limits market growth.
