According to the report, ban on mercury-based UV lighting solutions will be a key driver for market growth. Mercury-based lighting solutions, such as incandescent lamps, are banned due to their environmental concerns, thus resulting in a rise in the adoption of LED lighting source. This is the same scenario in the UV lighting market as well. UV LEDs are non-hazardous source of UV radiation, as these LEDs are ozone and mercury free and have other energy-saving properties that enhance sustainability. OEMs around the world are thus investing heavily in UV LED technology to reduce their power supply cost and adhere to legislative changes by replacing mercury-based UV lamps. It is easier to grow AlGaN-based materials on AlN substrates compared to conventionally used sapphire. These substrates are available in small sizes and are 2.5-4 times more expensive than sapphire wafers. This increases the overall UV LED production cost for manufacturers and limits market growth.
