SAPs are sodium polyacrylate cross-linked polymers. These polymers have the unique ability to absorb and retain large volumes of water. SAPs are produced by meticulous crosslinking of polyacrylate with suitable additives. The global SAP market relies largely on polyacrylate for the production of SAPs. When acrylic acid is polymerized with further crosslinking, super absorbent polyacrylates are produced. They are also known as hydrogels. SAPs have characteristic features of hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, high absorption capacities, swelling, and de-swelling.
