Global Sulfosuccinate Market 2017-2021
Sulfosuccinate is an anionic surfactant that acts as a mild cleanser. Sulfosuccinates are the sodium salts of alkyl ester and sulfosuccinic acid. It is synthesized by two-step methods. In the first step, maleic anhydride reacts with fatty alcohols or fatty acid alkanolamides. And in the second step, maleic ester undergoes the sulphonation process. They have two long lipophile chains that are similar to alkyl sulfonates. They provide suppleness in cosmetic and personal care products. Sulfosuccinates represent a diversified range of succinic acid derivatives. Monoesters and diesters are the well-known sulfosuccinate derivatives. Diesters, like Sodium diethylhexyl sulfosuccinate, owing to its high wetting ability, are used in industrial applications. Monoesters are surfactants with high foaming ability, and therefore, used in cosmetics and personal care products.
Technavio’s analysts forecast the global sulfosuccinate market to grow at a CAGR of 6.20% during the period 2017-2021.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is Growing demand from niche applications. The increasing scope in niche application segments such as textiles, petroleum processing, agrochemicals, drilling and mining, and others is expected to foster the demand for sulfosuccinate during the forecast period. The rising research and development activities in these niche applications is a major trend witnessed in the market. For instance, in the textile sector, sulfosuccinate-based products are used in textile dye formulations, due to its high wetting ability.”
According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Increasing demand from developing countries. The global sulfosuccinate market is witnessing high growth rate, especially from the developing economies of the world such as India; China; Brazil; Mexico; the Philippines; and Indonesia. Due to the abundant availability of raw materials; land; cheap labor; low transportation costs; and less stringent government policies, manufacturers of sulfosuccinate are expanding their business operations in these countries. The growing population rate, disposable income, and consumer purchase power in the developing countries of Asia and Latin America are expected to foster the demand for consumer goods such as cosmetics, personal care products, and detergents during the forecast period.
Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Availability of substitutes. Sulfosuccinate-based products or sulfosuccinate derivatives face challenges due to the presence of substitutes such as ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS), sodium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS). These anionic surfactants have almost similar applications and properties. They are used as surfactants in detergents, personal care products, cosmetics, and others. ALS has a complex structure due to its large molecular size. Due to which, it does not penetrate the outer layer of the skin, and hence, causes no harm to the delicate layers of skin cells.
