Global Smoke Grenade Market 2016-2020
About Smoke Grenade
A smoke grenade is a canister-type non-lethal (also called less lethal or less than lethal) munition that is primarily used either as a signaling or a screening device for the movement of troops and military equipment. Such grenades emit a significantly larger amount of smoke compared to conventional smoke bombs, which are predominantly used in fireworks. Owing to its superior screening capability, the use of smoke grenades has been substantially increased in the modern combat environment.

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Smoke Grenade Market 2016-2020
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global smoke grenade market: DIEHL BGT Defence, NonLethal Technologies, Rheinmetall Defence, Safariland, and 3rd Light.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Chemring Ordnance, Combined Systems, Dae-Kwang Chemical, and Sport Smoke.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Development of eco-friendly smoke grenades will be a key trend for market growth. Owing to the growing concern regarding safety, there have been increasing efforts among both defense organizations and private suppliers to develop eco-friendly smoke grenades, which can be a possible alternative to the existing generation of smoke grenades that are in operation. Since World War II, the US Army has been primarily using smoke grenades that are composed of hexachloroethane and zinc oxide. However, there is a high probability of discharging a toxic smoke-borne substance (zinc chloride) during the use of these grenades.”
According to the report, increased riots and protests in urban areas will be a key driver for market growth. Ongoing civil unrest and regional conflicts around the world are a major factor driving the market growth. This increase in the number of conflicts across the world has significantly raised the demand for non-lethal weapons. Law enforcement personnel often use smoke grenades and tear gas to disperse and control hostile civilians involved in riots in urban areas. In April 2015, the Maryland State Police and the National Guard troops of the US made use of smoke grenades and pepper balls in a riot control situation in Baltimore, Maryland, US. Law enforcement personnel also used similar smoke canisters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, US, in July 2016 as a measure to disperse rioting crowds.
Further, the report states that although the use of smoke grenades is not restricted to military and defense personnel, there are certain guidelines that civilians are required to adhere to while using smoke grenades. However, in recent times, many incidents have taken place that pose a challenge to the commercial smoke grenade industry. In June 2016, two juveniles were charged for igniting smoke grenades in the cafeteria of a high school during lunch time in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. As per the police investigation, it was revealed that at the time of the setting off of the smoke grenades, the cafeteria was filled with students and staff members, and could have resulted in serious injuries. Police identified those smoke grenades as the ones commonly used in the game of paintball.
