The major growth constraint for the millimeter wave technology equipment market is the range of the equipment. Millimeter wave equipment has short distance coverage of up to 3 km, depending on weather conditions. Some of the factors that affect its range are rainfall, humidity, and absorption by atmospheric oxygen. Moreover, the link prices are quite high, and there are no reductions for large-scale deployment. Vendors are working hard to bring down the implementation cost as there is a threat from other emerging technologies that can replace millimeter wave technology. One such emerging technology is free-space optics. Free-space optics offers full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet throughput. This technology does not require a license and can be implemented within 24 hours. Thus, millimeter wave technology faces tough competition on a global scale.
