About Microwave Radios

Microwave radios work on the underlying principle of microwave transmission. They transmit or exchange information between two devices using electromagnetic waves, having a wavelength ranging from 30 cm to 0.1 cm with radio spectrum of 1 GHz to 300 GHz. Microwaves follow point-to-point communication and can be easily directed by small-sized antennas, which point these narrow beams toward receiving antenna. The range of electromagnetic waves, which work on a frequency of above 30 GHz to below 100 GHz and have a wavelength of 10 mm to 3 mm, is called millimeter band. Radio waves in this band face strong attenuation from Earth’s atmosphere. The waves with a wide band of frequencies, around 60 GHz, get attenuated by oxygen.

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Microwave Radio Market 2016-2020

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Emergence of E-band and V-band radios will be a key trend for market growth. E band and V band are the millimeter waves having regulated and unregulated frequency ranges. V band supports a range coverage of 500 to 700 meters for gigabit capacity.”

According to the report, increase in demand for mobile data traffic will be a key driver for market growth. The global mobile data traffic has increased by 4,000 times since 2006. In 2015, the mobile network carried close to 10 gigabytes of data per month. Though 4G connections accounted for 14% of the total mobile connections in 2015, they contributed to 46% of the overall mobile data traffic. 3G access network accounted for 35% of the mobile connections and 44% of the total global mobile data traffic. In 2015, the mobile data consumption increased by 75% in 2014, with data consumption accounting for 3.7 exabytes per month.

Further, the report states that network consolidation will be a challenge for the market. Network operators are consolidating their networks due to high spectrum cost and frequency band cost of microwave radio. Many operators buy the spectrum band and deploy a minimum network. Later, they sell their whole infrastructure, including the spectrum, to other strong operators in the country of operation. The consolidation of network operators limits the demand for new sites or replacement sites from different operators and hence, reduces the demand for microwave radios. In many developing countries like India where many operators have a consolidated position, the overall demand for microwave radios is decreasing.
