Ionic liquids are salts with melting points lower than 100°C (212˚F). They are synthetic (organic) liquids that contain a positive ion (cation) and a negative ion (anion), wherein one or both of the ions are organic compounds. Organic cations typically contain nitrogen or phosphorus compounds, such as imidazolium, phosphonium, pyridinium, and ammonium, that are poorly coordinated with the anion. At least one of the ions has a delocalized charge such that the formation of the stable crystal lattice is prevented and strong electrostatic forces hold the ions together.
