However, most of the water on the earth's surface is unsafe to drink or use for basic activities, such as cooking and agriculture, as it contains various contaminants such as factory wastes, pollutants, and oil. The scarcity of safe, usable water creates a demand for water recycling as well as treatment processes such as desalination.”

According to the report, water treatment is gaining importance due to the shrinking of water resources globally. Less than 10 countries that include Brazil, Russia, China, Canada, Indonesia, the US, Colombia, India, and the Democratic Republic of Congo possess more than three-fifths of the world's fresh water supply. Two-fifths of the global population faces water shortage. The regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia are expected to face severe water shortage in the next decade, resulting from poor water management and improper recycling of water. Population growth, increasing per capita consumption of water, and urbanization are resulting in water scarcity. This is expected to increase the demand for water in the coming decade. Also, it is expected that climate change will influence the supply of water, and alter the regional distribution of freshwater supplies. Factors such as growing demand for water from the commercial sectors, overexploitation of groundwater supplies, rising pollution, water wastage, and emerging construction activities contribute to the growing water scarcity, thus creating the need for water treatment equipment.

Further, the report states that the presence of calcium and magnesium ions leads to hardness of water. These ions bind, harden, and thicken as their concentrations increase. In water purification systems that use membranes, these ions tend to block the membranes completely. This process is known as scaling of membranes and regular backwashing of membranes is required to tackle this issue. For instance, in an RO system, scaling of membrane makes the RO system work even harder, resulting in wastage of water, added utility bills, and inefficient water purification. Thus, the wastewater generated contain higher minerals as well as chemicals, contributing to scale formation in boilers, cooling towers, and other industrial equipment.
