In recent times, the decline in the desktop sales and increase in the demand for industrial PCs have incited commercial motherboard manufacturers like Asus to enter the industrial motherboard market and offer industrial motherboards with at least five years of product life cycle. Commercial motherboard manufacturers are able to transit easily to produce industrial motherboards with the existing infrastructure or with the acquisition of sub-assembly manufacturers.”
According to the report, the operation of industrial PCs, PLCs, and DCS involves the transmission of data among various components such as hard drives, memory, processor, and through the industrial motherboard. This generates excess heat in the industrial motherboard and can damage the industrial motherboard, if the heat energy is not dissipated properly. Traditionally, industrial motherboards contain fans for dissipation of excess heat. However, fans are prone to mechanical failure, especially in hostile industrial environments, thus compromising the integrity of the overall system due to industrial motherboard damage. Hence, fan-less industrial motherboards are increasingly being adopted, especially in fan-less industrial PCs.
Further, the report states that a motherboard is the most pivotal piece of hardware in any system, commercial or industrial, as it integrates several hardware and software components and has several connections. Motherboard failures usually occur due to the failure of cooling systems and, if not detected early, can damage processor and lead to complete system shutdown.
