According to the report, one driver in the market is decreasing battery prices allowing OEMs to push cost benefit toward customers. The adoption of electric motorcycles is dependent on the battery. Battery technology plays a key role because it decides the mile range and charging time for electric motorcycles. Battery accounts for 25% of the total cost hence, it affects the profitability and adoption rate. The evolution from the traditional lead-acid battery to Li-ion battery has led to eight times better performance. The market is facing continuous improvement in battery technology, which increases the battery energy density.
Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is high purchasing cost of high-performance electric motorcycles. High-performance electric motorcycles are more expensive than conventional ICE motorcycles. High-performance electric motorcycles face intense competition from ICE motorcycles regarding initial costs and the total cost of ownership. Generally, the initial cost of electric motorcycles is higher than ICEs, but the total cost of ownership is more for ICEs due to maintenance and fuel charges. If we compare 2014 Zero SR with Ducati Monster 821, the cost of Ducati is $11,495, and that of Zero SR is $17,345.
