Boron nitride is a chemical compound containing boron and nitrogen in equal proportions. It exhibits high bandgap, hardness, chemical, and thermal stability. It is usually used in high-temperature applications.
The compound physically exists in amorphous (non-crystalline) and crystalline forms — hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), cubic (c-BN), and wurtzite (w-BN) forms. Amorphous boron nitride is mostly used in electronics and semiconductor industries. Hexagonal boron nitride is the most stable of all forms of the compound and has diverse applications. Cubic boron nitride has a sphalerite crystal structure and has excellent chemical and thermal stability; it is considered analogous to diamond. Wurtzite-boron nitride has a lonsdaleite-like structure.
