Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The private sector has become an important partner in the area of healthcare. The private sector can bear the ownership of female condom promotion and distribution. However, the donor commitments to agencies, governments, or NGOs do not yet meet the complete contraceptive needs of the people. Many low-income countries are presently in the process of a changeover toward a middle-income status and therefore people are increasingly willing and able to buy their own condoms. The involvement of the private sector, particularly commercial manufacturers, would be an important step in improving the availability and affordability of female condoms. Considering the market conditions, partnerships and blended financing mechanisms are becoming more popular, bringing together various partners from private and public sectors.”
According to the report, the governments across the globe have been quite instrumental in driving the demand for condoms. The Chinese government, through a number of programs, provides about three billion condoms to its citizens. The USAID has funded condom programs to assist countries in addressing key supply and demand issues related to condom use. Its market approach involves giving free condoms and take part in social marketing initiatives that provide subsidized condoms. It also helps improve sustainability by decreasing the reliance on donor subsidies and increasing the ownership of the country.
Further, the report states that the use of contraceptive products has become acceptable in the society; however, a portion of the society still consider them taboo due to the stereotype of them being vulgar. This perception of the society often dissuades people from buying these products. Due to its religious reasons, most of the societies feel it is immoral and unethical to use contraceptives. A large population in conservative countries perceive contraception as against their religious sentiments, thus limiting the adoption of contraceptives. However, various government and vendor initiatives are increasing the awareness of contraceptives to change the way of thinking in these countries. In the law few years, the emergence of e-commerce has helped overcome this hurdle to a large extent by safeguarding the anonymity of the buyer. However, the perception of the society largely remains the same and poses a major challenge to the growth of the market. Therefore, questions related to the morals of the products creates an inhibition in the minds of the consumers, which will significantly hamper the sales of female condoms due to the negative image of the products.
