Ethanol-based vehicles or ethanol FFVs are referred to as E85 vehicles in the US and Flex vehicles in Brazil. In Europe, the vehicle OEMs append the word Flex with their FFV models. Examples include Volkswagen Total Flex, Renault Hi-Flex, and Volvo Flexifuel. The E10 blend, which is Ethanol 10% and Gasoline 90%, is the most commonly blended automotive fuel available in the US and since 2011, E15 has been approved for use in conventional US vehicles with model year 2001. E85 blend, which still holds the minority share in the US markets, has huge growth potential in the US automotive industry.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “One trend in market is the gradual industrial shift to the use of second-generation ethanol. First-generation biofuels (bioethanol, in this case) are usually made from sugars and vegetable oils found in crops. These can be easily extracted by using conventional technologies. Second-generation biofuels, on the other hand, are made from lignocellulosic biomass or woody crops, agricultural residues, and waste. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most widely available raw material on earth, which can be used to produce biofuels, primarily bioethanol. It is composed of carbohydrate polymers like cellulose and hemicellulose, and an aromatic polymer (lignin).”

According to the report, one driver in market is automakers showing an increasing shift toward alternative fuel based vehicles: A possible boost for the ethanol bus market. The increasing concern about GHG emissions has led the governments across the globe to focus on alternative sources of fuel. Consequently, a lot of emphases have been made in the transportation sector because of the sectors’ increasing consumption (indicated by the increase in the number of vehicles hitting the road every day). The transportation sector is the second largest GHG emissions contributor, necessitating aggressive steps to curb the same.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is subsidies to fossil fuel consumption to reduce growth of ethanol consumption, leading to stunted growth of the ethanol bus market. As per Technavio's secondary research, the fossil fuel consumption subsidies stood at $493 billion in 2014 globally. These subsidies are over four times higher than the subsidies offered to renewable energy. Several emerging countries of APAC and Central and South America enjoy the benefits of decreased fossil fuel prices because of these subsidies. Therefore, these countries prefer the use of petroleum over renewables. These pose a challenge to the consumption of ethanol, restraining the growth of the ethanol-based vehicle's market.
