About Electronic Insect Killers

The electronic insect killer consists of few parts like the ultraviolet light source, electric power supply, and a wire grid. The housing of the electronic insect killer is made from plastic or the grounded metal. The shape of the electric insect killer is usually rounded or cubic. The electronic insect killers are of various types; namely the rackets, lanterns, and the zappers. To attract insects and other mosquitoes, a UV source is used. This bulb transmits the ultraviolet light that attracts many bugs and insects. They are then collected in a special collection tray under the zapper or simply are dropped on the ground under the zapper. However, when an insect gets attracted to the ultraviolet light emitted by the electric insect killers, they fly to the light source, gets through the plastic casing, and they reach the electric grid that covers the light and gets electrocuted by more than 2,000V power. However, electronic insect killers are effective for those insects that can detect and are attracted to ultraviolet light. One drawback of the appliance is that it fails to attract and kill mosquitoes, because they get attracted to carbon dioxide. Also, the availability of counterfeit products acts as a hindrance to the market growth worldwide.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Zika virus saw its origin in the 1950s that monitored yellow fever. This disease was detected in Uganda in 1952. However, the outbreaks were noticed in APAC and Africa in 1990s. Since then the virus has been growing to different regions apart from APAC and Africa. The year 2015 witnessed the emergence of the same in South America with widespread outbreaks in Colombia and Brazil. The geographical distribution of Zika is widening over the period since the virus was detected in 2015 in the Americas. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever insect that spreads and transmits Zika virus in growing and developing in regions like the US. The following exhibit reflects the growth of Zika virus in the US.”

According to the report, rising health issues from the insect bites is rising over the period. Malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya virus, encephalitis virus, and Zika virus are some of the major diseases that are caused frequently from the insect bite. Chikungunya virus and the rift valley fever are expected to hit Europe in the forecast period. These insects are however more prevalent in the US.

Further, the report states that despite the growing awareness of deadly diseases caused and spread by insects and other pests, many potential consumers are reluctant to purchase pest control devices and prefer using alternative solutions such as natural remedies for controlling pests. For instance, using waste plant material in Mexico, burning wet logs in metal pots in Colombia, and burning neem leaves and kernels in Sri Lanka are common practices to save themselves from the stings of the insect bites. The people have also started growing plants like lemongrass, rosemary, thyme, basil, mint, and eucalyptus in their gardens, as these plants act as natural pest barriers. Mosquito patches, mosquito bands, sticky traps for insects, bait, sprayers, and foggers are some other alternative pest control products being widely used in countries across the world.
