Global Electric Shaver Market 2017-2021
About Electric Shaver
In the hair removal appliance segment of the personal care appliance market, the demand for electric shavers is rising. Male users dominate the market demand and are followed by female users. Although manual shaving options dominate the shaver market due to their cost advantage, men are increasingly switching to electric alternatives, especially in developed countries. Ease of use, simplification, sophistication, branding, and appeal associated with ownership of high-value brands, less time consuming, higher quality of shaving/trimming, and multi-functionality (different sets of blades for different styling effects) are some factors driving the sales of electric shavers. With more women entering the global workforce, the demand for and the affordability of hair removal appliances such as electric shavers have increased for shaving body areas such as legs and armpits.
Technavio’s analysts forecast the global electric shaver market to grow at a CAGR of 3.77% during the period 2017-2021.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Besides an increase in appearance consciousness among consumers, there are several other reasons for the rise in the preference for body hair removal. For instance, the removal of hair is prescribed by religion customs such as tonsure, a traditional aspect of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism. Body hair removal is also important after surgery, which requires shaving to eradicate lice or minimize body odor due to the accumulation of odor-causing micro-organisms in hair. Shaving head before chemotherapy is also becoming popular to avoid irregular hair loss, and many individuals with cancer prefer to shave their heads even before starting chemotherapy for comfort. In extreme cases, people may need to remove all body hair to prevent or combat infestation by lice, fleas, and other parasites. Such practices will continue to increase the demand for shaving products such as electric shavers.”
According to the report, the transformation in the socio-economic scenario in major countries such as the US and the UK has led to an evolution in the concepts of beauty, wellness, and grooming. These ideas, which were traditionally considered female-centric, are becoming increasingly gender-neutral. People have become more confident about embracing their individuality. The millennials are less confined by traditional gender roles and conventional norms. As the world is getting more competitive, men are also feeling the pressure to perform well in all spheres and are paying more attention to personal grooming.
Further, the report states that the growing demand for alternative hair removal solutions such as laser technology will negatively impact the sales of electric shavers. In December 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first at-home laser hair remover developed by P&G's Gillette and Palomar Medical Technologies. Other manufacturers have also launched similar products. The rising demand for laser hair removal is due to its advantages such as long-lasting results, option to selectively target the hair leaving the surrounding skin undamaged, less pain, and speed of the treatment.
