SAN is a high-speed network of storage devices connected to the server. It provides block level data storage for applications running on networked servers. At the block level, it allows multiple server computers connect to one storage device.
Simultaneous access to a particular storage within the storage device is not permitted in SAN systems. However, they allow a server to take over and control a storage volume. The backup server should take control of the primary server by connecting to the storage volume in the event of a system failure in a clustered environment. From the application point of view, SAN is similar to DAS, in terms of compatibility, during block level storage operations. SAN is preferred by enterprises as it offers better flexibility, availability, and performance compared to DAS storage systems.
