About DC drives
A drive is an adjustable device that regulates the speed and torque of motors by varying electrical frequency and voltage. Drives are broadly classified into two: AC drives and DC drives. AC drives are used to control the speed of AC electric motors while DC drives are used to control the speed of DC electric motors. DC drives consist of thyristor-based controllers that help in controlling the speed/torque of DC motors. Armature control and field control techniques are used to control speed in DC drives. DC drives are preferred in locomotive applications because of high-power thyristors and simple design.
Technavio's analysts forecast the global DC drives market to grow at a CAGR of 9.33% over the period 2014-2019.

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global DC Drives Market 2015-2019
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the Global DC Drives Market: ABB, Schneider and Siemens
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Beijing Leader & Harvest Electric, Danfoss, Emerson, Fuji Electric, Hiconics Drive, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Rockwell Automation, Toshiba and Yaskawa America
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The global DC drives market is negatively affected by the growing trend of manufacturers in industries such as F&B, power, automotive, metal processing and textiles industries replacing DC motors with more efficient AC motors. Globally, the market for AC motors is six to seven times larger than the market for DC motors. The growth of more affordable AC technology and the rising use of inverters in industries have prompted end-users to replace their existing DC systems with AC systems.”
According to the report, DC motors are widely used in electric vehicles across the world, especially in the US, Japan, Europe, South Africa, China, and India, which is boosting the demand for DC drives.
Further, the report states that factors such as harmonic distortion created by DC drives into the power line and their need for regular servicing and repair are affecting market growth.
