About Coreless DC Motors

Direct current (DC) motor is one of the two elementary types of motors; the other type is the alternating current (AC) motor. Among DC motors, there are shunt-wound, series-wound, compound-wound, and permanent magnet motors. A DC motor's speed can be controlled over a wide range of revolutions per minute (rpm), by using a variable supply voltage or by altering the strength of the current in its field windings. Coreless DC motors are used in compact objects, and the trend of miniaturization of products is set to increase the need for coreless DC motors during the forecast period. Coreless DC motors vary from DC motors in significant ways. The most important difference being the rotor winding. Instead of coils wounded around a stack of iron laminations, the coil in coreless DC motors is molded as a thin hollow cylinder.

The sterility factor led to the creation of disposable medical devices. New sensor technology, which senses and records changes in electrical properties, has helped in creating disposable medical sensors. Disposable medical sensors are extremely useful in diagnosis, therapeutics, and monitoring of patients. For example, disposable blood pressure sensors are utilized during surgery for continuously monitoring patients’ blood pressure. These sensors are plugged into a monitor on which patients’ vital information can be viewed. They are also used in intensive-care units but are replaced every 24 hours.”

Coreless DC motors have a self-supporting, progressive, skew-wound, ironless rotor coil; which has higher efficiency than iron core motors. These motors do not require iron laminations in the armature. The construction and design of coreless DC motors is such that the rotor is extremely light, yielding a low moment of inertia. This, in effect, allows faster acceleration resulting in a much smaller mechanical time constant during operation. Another benefit of coreless DC motors is that they can be manufactured in compact sizes, which is why they excel in space-constrained applications. The rotor rotates smoothly without cogging, and coreless DC motor’s windings have very low inductance. These characteristics help reduce brush wear and prevent electro-erosion, thus increasing the motor’s lifespan.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Overheating of coreless DC motors. With no iron laminations, coreless DC motors are slightly prone to overheating. In some instances, a heat sink can be used to alleviate this problem. Coreless DC motors can reach very high rpm, and due to a compact structure, they can heat up quickly, especially while running at full load for a short time. So, it is generally recommended to use a cooling system with these motors. Overheating can be a serious problem, especially for coreless micro DC motors. So, a disadvantage of a coreless DC motor is that, it cannot handle overloads when compared with a cored motor. The bonding adhesive, which grips the windings, can lose its bonding character due to overheating, and prolonged instances of such sort can ultimately lead to motor breakdown/ failure.
