These motors do not require iron laminations in the armature. The construction and design of coreless DC motors is such that the rotor is extremely light, yielding a low moment of inertia. This, in effect, allows faster acceleration resulting in a much smaller mechanical time constant during operation. Another benefit of coreless DC motors is that they can be manufactured in compact sizes, which is why they excel in space-constrained applications. The rotor rotates smoothly without cogging, and coreless DC motor’s windings have very low inductance. These characteristics help reduce brush wear and prevent electro-erosion, thus increasing the motor’s lifespan.

With no iron laminations, coreless DC motors are slightly prone to overheating. In some instances, a heat sink can be used to alleviate this problem. Coreless DC motors can reach very high rpm, and due to a compact structure, they can heat up quickly, especially while running at full load for a short time. So, it is generally recommended to use a cooling system with these motors. Overheating can be a serious problem, especially for coreless micro DC motors. So, a disadvantage of a coreless DC motor is that, it cannot handle overloads when compared with a cored motor. The bonding adhesive, which grips the windings, can lose its bonding character due to overheating, and prolonged instances of such sort can ultimately lead to motor breakdown/ failure.
