Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The regulatory requirements for green and energy-efficient buildings are driving the demand for eco-friendly construction sealants. Polyurethane and silicone-based sealants are expected to report quick benefits due to their better performance. In addition to reactive sealants, hotmelt products also have a healthy demand from various applications owing to their rapid cure rates, which help in fast processing. Also, hotmelt products do not emit VOCs and do not pose any harmful effects on the environment, because of which these are being encouraged by various vendors. For instance, Dow Chemical has come up with bio-based polyol sealants through RENUVA Renewable Resource Technology, which is used in construction activities such as flooring and lazing.”
According to the report, the growth in urbanization and infrastructure investment is driving the market for construction sealants. Construction sealants are used to provide value-added benefits in terms of improved performance, along with increased protection from environmental threats, greater durability, and protection against seepage and leakage.
Further, the report states that the various chemicals present in sealants have adverse effects on health and the environment. Direct contact with calcium carbonate, xylene, calcium oxide, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) causes eye irritation. Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) causes itching and redness. MDI causes irritation to the mucous membranes. Ethyl benzene can get absorbed through the skin and cause damage. Inhalation of silica or calcium oxide results in irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, upper respiratory tract, and lungs. It may also lead to drowsiness. Inhaling high concentrations of BBP, xylene, or ethyl benzene often causes respiratory irritation and affects the central nervous system. This can be recognized by a headache, nausea, and dizziness. MDI vapors or mist affect the upper respiratory tract. It causes soreness of the nose and throat, coughing, and sneezing. Due to these effects, the demand for sealants might be hindered.
