According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is demand for 6x2 axle trucks to drive value for transfer cases. 6x2 axles configuration involves six wheels and three axles. However, only one rear tandem axle will be powered by the engine while the other rear axle is considered 'dead'. Dead axle configuration offers better fuel efficiency, decreased maintenance costs, stable operations, and better weight distribution. Transfer cases are specifically built for 6x2 configurations as these would be required to withstand tremendous rotating power of the engine to the single rear axle, which is powered by the engine, and increased weight due to the additional load of freight. The increase in the sales of 6x2 commercial trucks will drive the market for transfer cases used in these trucks.
Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is improperly balanced propeller shafts to reduce efficiency of transfer case. An unbalanced and heavy propeller shaft would cause serious vibrations upon rotations, which would adversely affect the effectiveness of a transfer case. Propeller shafts are used for transferring engine torque from the transfer case to the rear wheels. A vibrating propeller shaft would reduce the amount of engine power being transferred from the transfer case to the rear wheels and thereby increase chances of breakage and vehicle breakdown. Heavyweight single piece propeller shaft causes a significant amount of sag when rotations reach optimum levels. This contributes to increased amount of vibrations within the drivetrain system. Increasing vibration levels decrease the quality and life of propeller shaft, thereby causing it to break upon exceeding optimal levels of rotations.
