Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Cider Packaging Market 2016-2020
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global cider packaging market: Amcor, Ardagh Packaging, Ball, Crown Holdings, Owens-Illinois, and Rexam.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Allied Glass Containers, Can-Pack, MeadWestvaco, Nampak, Plastipak Packaging, Silgan Holdings, Consol Glass, Vetropack Holding, and Vidrala.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The presence of popular brands like Kopparberg, Woodchuck, and Angry Orchard has increased the demand for premium-quality cider. Premium brands are in high demand compared to economically priced products due to its rise in disposable income, consumption of alcohol as a status symbol, and the association of premium labels with beverage quality and taste. The high demand for premium alcohol among consumers is because it is better in smoothness and mouthfeel and is perfect for sipping. Premium cider accounts for 34.5% of all cider volumes. Even in mature markets like the US and France, premiumization is driving the market and consumers are shifting from local spirits to premium spirits. Hence, the trend for premiumization across all product categories will boost the growth of the cider packaging market during the forecast period.”
According to the report, development of plastic packaging solutions will be a key driver for market growth. In the packaging of alcoholic beverages, it is difficult to prevent ingress of oxygen and carbon dioxide escaping the package. Vendors are investing and developing new PET bottles, which protects the product for longer durations. Plastic is increasingly gaining preference over glass bottles and metal cans because the plastics are lightweight, comparatively lower in costs, and are available in various designs. For instance, Sidel launched the pasteurisable lightweight PET bottle for beer with a nonpetaloid base in 2014. The bottle looks like a glass bottle through its base design and crown cap. It also features the benefits of PET like increased mechanical properties, light weight, and safety.
Further, the report states that one of the challenges for the market will be the latent vertical integration of manufacturers. Potential vertical integration may result in the introduction of new production capacity in the market. In addition, this can cause an imbalance between the demand and supply for cider packaging. The big brewers are developing their own packaging products production to reduce their dependency on cider packaging vendors and support their core business operations. For instance, MillerCoors has partnered with Rocky Mountain Metal Can and invested a 50% stake in its Colorado plant which produces over 4 billion cans a year. In the US, companies like Gallo and Anheuser-Busch have developed a glass plant. In addition, Carlsberg, is spending on R&D to develop cardboard bottles to serve beer. Vertical integration is likely to become a key strategic operational process for these firms in the future, which is expected to affect the packaging business.
